Grey’s Anatomy season 19 spoilers follow.
Ellen Pompeo has released a goodbye message ahead of her on-screen departure in Grey’s Anatomy.
The original Grey’s cast member is set to depart on screen in January, though she’ll remain as narrator and return in person as Meredith Gray for the show’s season finale next spring.
Ahead of those exit scenes airing, Pompeo has paid tribute to the fans and promised they haven’t seen the last of Meredith.

“I am eternally grateful and humbled by the love and support you have all shown me, Meredith GRAY and the show for 19 season,” she wrote on Instagram.
“Through it all….none of it …would have been possible without the best fans in the world. You all are RIDERS and you all have made the ride so fun and ICONIC!! I love you madly and appreciate you right back. This isn’t your first time on the rollercoaster… you know the show must go on and I’ll definitely be back to visit. With a lot of love and immense gratitude XoE”
It was announced earlier this year that Pompeo would be taking a limited role in the 19th season of Grey’s so she can film another TV series that she is also producing.
There had been some speculation that this new show would reunite Pompeo with former Grey’s Anatomy co-star Patrick Dempsey, but he has since denied those rumours.
“It just is a real testament to the fans that they want to see that couple still together and what an impact it is,” he told EW.
“But no, I haven’t read anything, I haven’t seen anything, and I haven’t talked to her about it.”
The producers of Grey’s Anatomy have spent the first part of season 19 setting up Meredith’s departure by introducing a new cast of interns to act as the next generation of doctors at Gray Sloan Memorial Hospital.
Grey’s Anatomy season 19 airs on Thursdays on ABC in the US. The show streams on Disney+ in the UK, where new episodes premiere on Wednesdays.
